Elite Porsche tuner RUF gets in on the electric game with three eRUF models

Elite Porsche tuner RUF gets in on the electric game with three eRUF models
If you want a Porsche with a little bit more -- more power, more handling, more brakes, more outrageous styling -- you want a RUF. It's technically an independent auto manufacturer, but every model starts with a Porsche that gets systematically turned up to 11. The haus that Ferdinand built just announced a handful of electric cars and now RUF is getting in on the game too, creating three separate models. First is the all EV Single Motor Concept, a 911 with a 241hp motor that'll do 93 miles on a charge, has a top speed of 136mph, and can hit 60 in about seven seconds. Next up is the Twin Motor Concept, pairing two 335hp motors to a larger battery, enabling 124 miles of range, top speed of 137mph, and 0 - 60 in a much more respectable five seconds.

Finally there's the Twin Motor Concept with Torque Vectoring. This again has two 335hp motors but this time each one drives a separate rear wheel, enabling dynamic torque vectoring. Range and acceleration are the same but handling should theoretically be much better when going through the twisties. And, really, that's what it's all about. Right now ten of these cars have been built for testing. They're not available for general purchase but we have it on good authority that they'll be very, very expensive when they do ship.

Land Rover develops Range_e hybrid, will show it off at the Geneva Motor Show

You know electric cars are in the ascendancy when even the fearsome 4x4s start looking to add an extra little spark to their energy production and storage. Land Rover has just announced it'll demo one -- there are multiple working versions -- of its development prototypes at the Geneva Motor Show next month, treating us to an exhibition of what a diesel engine can do when augmented with some electric firepower. The Range_e's design is based on the Range Rover Sport and its 3.0-liter TDV6 core, however the new vehicle is capable of going a full 20 miles purely on its electric charge and touts a whopping 690-mile range altogether. Let's hope Geneva shows enough interest in the Range_e to compel Land Rover to turn it into a commercial reality.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: trains speed up, paint improves planes, and the CO2-scrubbing artificial trees

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

This week Inhabitat saw high-speed railways pick up steam around the globe as China announced plans to build a trans-continental railroad in South America and Japan began developing the world's fastest high-speed train. We also saw eco transportation reach new heights as a kite-powered car completed an epic 5,000km journey across Australia and researchers developed a nanotech paint that will increase the fuel efficiency of airplanes. The automotive world is also gearing up for the Geneva car show as Toyota is getting set to roll out an all-electric IQ and Porsche pulled back the curtain on its Panamera S Hybrid and Boxster EV.

In other news, this week we brought you an exclusive video interview where celebrated environmentalist Stewart Brand argues that nuclear power could save the world. We also explored several other alternative energy sources that are decidedly less controversial - PurposeEnergy is transforming beer brewing waste into a source of clean-burning biofuel, and a design duo has proposed a series of beautiful solar-powered artificial trees that scrub CO2 from the air.

Roughly one in every six people do not have access to safe drinking water, so we were excited to learn about a pedal-powered water purification system based on the bicycle that holds great promise for the developing world. Speaking of cleaning up dirty water, this week Stephen Baldwin sued Kevin Costner over the oil-separating technology that cleaned up the BP oil spill. And last but not least, we were wowed by this hydrofloor system, which can save space and energy by concealing a swimming pool beneath your living room floor!

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

TeamViewer for Android boosts performance, exits beta

TeamViewer is one of the most popular remote control apps around, and its mobile version for Android has been an incredibly handy tool for on-the-go administrators since its beta release. Now, TeamViewer for Android has shed the beta tag, and it's ready for full time remote admin duties.

The updated version offers better support for hardware keyboards and Swype, and optical trackballs and d-pads can now be used to control the mouse pointer. Additional translations have also been added, and TeamViewer's performance and stability has improved noticeably since the beta release.

As is the case with its desktop app, TeamViewer for Android is free for personal use. Commercial use requires a paid desktop license, but there's no additional charge for the mobile app. TeamViewer isn't listed in the Android Market, so you'll need to know how to install non-Market apps on your device and get it right from the company's webpage -- the QR Code is after the break.

Amazon Appstore for Android will let you buy apps without a device

No Android device? No problem! Turns out Amazon's upcoming Appstore for Android -- which has been in the works for some time -- will allow you to purchase apps even before you receive the device you intend to install them on, presumably so that you're stocked up and ready to go by the time the phone (or tablet, or whatever miscellaneous gizmo) arrives on your doorstep. As AllThingsD points out, the concept appears to go partway toward mimicking Amazon's Kindle business model, which does a decent job of decoupling content (which is associated with your Amazon account) from the actual hardware you've got it installed on. We still don't know exactly when the Appstore is launching, but considering Amazon's retail chops, these guys might actually stand a chance at cutting into the Android Market's revenue by some noticeable margin.

BMW puts a range-extending ICE in its Megacity EV, provides tonic for your range anxiety

When we first left the safe confines of our parents' home, many of us experienced separation anxiety. As we grow older, we suffer from disconnection anxiety -- and no, iPhone owners, that doesn't refer to your fear of dropped calls. Now, BMW is combating our range anxiety, or fear of being stranded when your car's batteries run out of juice, by putting an internal combustion range extender in its Megacity EV. BMW is taking a page out of the Chevy Volt's playbook by placing a small ICE in its EV that doubles the range of the vehicle from 50 to 100 miles -- all in an effort to assuage the (irrational?) fears of its potential US customers. The gasoline generator will be an option for those who wish to venture beyond the city limits, so if you want to keep it totally green you can still do so. Our Bavarian friends won't be bringing the Megacity to market until 2013, so that should give you enough time to decide if you want to hasten the death of the ICE or prolong its life a bit longer.

Google Social Search gets more visible

Google has rolled out an update to its search results that will make your friends and contacts play a prominent role in what you see first. Google Social Search has been around since 2009 but has played a fairly minor supporting role until now. With the update, Google will use data from sources like Buzz, Reader, Twitter, Quora, and Flickr to position your personalized search results.

Presumably, if you want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and you're friends with Matt Cutts, and he's written about the climb, you'll want to see what he has to say about it. We'd certainly rather see results like this in our top ten than content farm spam -- which Google is also busy combating with its Personal Blocklist extension.

Gmail now uses the Google Chrome PDF viewer to display attachments

If you use access Gmail in Google Chrome on your computer, you can now view PDF attachments using Chrome's built-in viewer. The Chrome PDF plug-in is faster than the Google Docs previewer, its rendering accuracy is better, and you don't have to change settings anywhere for this to take effect. Just use Gmail in Google Chrome and the 'view' link will automatically open your file in the Chrome PDF viewer.

The change is also nice because Chrome's PDF plug-in actually lets you print, unlike the previewer which can only manage recursion printing (it generates a PDF of your PDF).

Users of Google Apps will receive the feature soon, according to a post on the Google Apps blog.

AT&T confirms the Inspire 4G does not feature HSUPA

Inspire 4G speedtest

We've been hearing from many of you who bought a shiny new Inspire 4G that there appears to be an issue with the device upload speeds.  While AT&T is busy working out the kinks in their HSPA+ network, getting backhaul in place and pouring the magic 4G dust into the wires, most of us with an Inspire 4G are still using the 3G HSPA network.  HSPA is broken down into two parts -- HSDPA (download) and HSUPA (upload).

The Inspire 4G is not HSUPA capable, according to AT&T.  No conspiracy.  No rumor.  Just the answer, straight from the source.

This explains why most of us are seeing fast 3G download speeds, but no-so-much on the upload side.  I had a bit of a play with this myself last night, and see the same thing -- download speeds around 2 Mbps, and upload speeds around 200 kbps.  You can see above what our (and TiPb's) own Jeremy Sikora is seeing for speeds in Chicago.  He also notes that upload speeds on his iPhone 4 (which is HSUPA capable) are about twice what he sees with his Inspire.

While it's not the news most of us want to hear, it does clear up the confusion.  Thanks to the folks at AT&T who took time to answer our questions.
