Google Gearing Up For A Chrome Web Store Launch (For Real This Time)

Back in August, at a conference in Europe, Google showed a little preview of the Chrome Web Store and noted that a launch would probably take place in October. While there were some hints of it coming along in October (including some pricing details that were apparently turned on by accident), it never came. And since today is the last day of November, I think it's safe to say it's not coming this month either. But it now definitely appears that Google is ramping up for an early December launch of the store, perhaps alongside a Chrome 8 release or a Chrome 9 beta release. Earlier today, there was a flurry of activity in the Chromium Issues list. Specifically, there was a lot of activity surrounding the "ReleaseBlock" labeled items. And if you look them over, you'll notice that most of these 16 issues are related to the Web Store or Chrome Apps in some way. Google appears to be tying up loose ends to get this product out the door as soon as possible.

ViewMarks for Firefox makes bookmarks visual and huge

viewmarks

In these days of social bookmarking, ViewMarks is a Firefox add-on that sticks with the old-fashioned way of storing your bookmarks on your own computer. But this is the default behavior for Firefox anyway, so why should you get excited about ViewMarks?

It's all in the graphics -- basically, ViewMarks saves a thumbnail along with each bookmark. The result looks kind of like the Speed Dial feature used by Opera and Chrome (and Firefox, too, if you install an extension). But it applies across all of your bookmarks and folders, not just the select few that you use every day.

If you already have existing bookmarks (and who doesn't, really?), ViewMarks will not poll all of them for screenshots upon installation. Instead, as you visit each website, ViewMarks will capture its screenshot and then use it. Any new bookmarks that you add will get a screenshot the moment you add them, of course.

One odd quirk on my system was that ViewMarks kept resizing the browser window to a certain size. I suspect it did that in order to get the screenshot just right, but it really shouldn't do this. Except for this one annoyance, this can be a nice add-on if you're the visual sort.

Dell Vostro V130 updated with more ports, fancy 'Hyperbaric' cooling

Back when we reviewed the Dell Vostro V13 we had a few complaints, including the fact that it lasted less than three hours on a charge and lacked an HDMI port. Well, Dell's gone and taken care of at least one of those issues with its new Vostro V130. The original thin and light chassis has been kept intact, which means there's still the same old battery issues, but Dell's freshened up the 13.3-inch magnesium alloy laptop with an HDMI port, extra USB socket, a SIM card slot, new Core i3 / i5 ULV processor options, and some new Intel "Hyperbaric Cooling" technology. We don't know much about that new cooling stuff, but apparently it will help the .65-inch thick system stay cool and quiet. Oh, and did we mention it now comes in that bright red hue?! The small business machine still starts an impressive $429 and is available today. If you're looking for more details hit the break for the full press release and the gallery below for some glossy shots.

Netflix launches $7.99 streaming-only plan, increases price of DVD plan

Netflix plansAfter a trial back in October, Netflix has now announced its $7.99/month streaming-only plan. This matches the Hulu Plus price drop from last week. Of course, both services have different libraries of TV shows and movies -- and Hulu Plus still has ads!

The new plan is targeted squarely at the growing army of those that find physical media a thing of the past. Still, a difference of just $2 is a small price to pay for the option of unlimited DVDs.

In other news, Netflix has increased the price of its DVD-loaning plans, presumably to cover the growth of its streaming service. One-DVD-at-a-time now costs a dollar more ($9.99), with larger plans increasing by a similar percentage.

The only-two-DVDs-a-month plan price remains unchanged.

ProFounder Launches To Help Small Businesses Crowdsource Fundraising

Raising funds for a small business can be a daunting task for any fledgeling entrepreneur. Whether it be from friends and family or from the general public, finding investors, setting terms of the funding, assigning equity and filing compliance documents is a challenge. Enter ProFounder, a stealth startup that launches today to ensure that all entrepreneurs and small businesses have access to an easy and simple fundraising platform. ProFounder, which has been in private beta for the past year, offers entrepreneurs two ways to raise money on the site: through a private fundraising round, and/or a public fundraising round. The private fundraising rounds allow entrepreneurs to share a percentage of their revenues with investors (their friends, family, and community) over time. Essentially, this type of fundraising round is an offering of securities, and ProFounder helps facilitate compliance with state and federal laws related to this offering.

CCleaner 3.01 update makes it faster, nixes reboots, adds Adobe Reader X support

CCleaner just hit version 3.0 recently, but Piriform has already pushed an incremental update to the popular clean-up app. What's new in CCleaner 3.01? For starters, there's support for Adobe Reader X and Acronis True Image, better cookie detection for users of Firefox 4 beta 7, and improved handling of 7-zip, Chromium-based browsers like SRWare Iron, MMC, Silverlight local storage, and Adobe Reader 9. You also no longer need to reboot after CCleaner finishes cleaning up your Internet Explorer index.dat files (huzzah!).

CCleaner 3.01 isn't all about app support, however. It also starts up and scans faster, and both the uninstall tool and drive wiper have been improved. If you've got CCleaner set to check for updates, just fire it up and follow the prompts. Otherwise, you can download CCleaner 3.01 from the builds page.

Why Gawker is moving beyond the blog [Video]

The 2011 template represents the most significant change in the Gawker model since the launch of Gizmodo and Gawker in 2002. One could go further: it represents an evolution of the very blog form that has transformed online media over the last eight years. The internet, television and magazines are merging; and the optimal strategy will assemble the best from each medium. More »
