Bing mobile search gets HTML5 enhancements for iOS and Android
The Bing team has just delivered a major update to its mobile search. m.bing.com now utilizes HTML5 tech to deliver better image and iOS app search, as well as realtime directions and transit info to Android and iOS users. It gets better, too. If the update situation for Windows Phone 7 wasn't bad enough, the official blog post offers this sad-trombone style news for WP7 users: "If you have a Windows Phone 7 device, don't worry, Windows Phone 7 just announced that it will support HTML5 later this year so these updates will work great at that time."
For a look at how the new Bing mobile works on Android and iOS -- or how it might eventually work on your WP7 device -- take the jump and check out the video.

NYC Announces BigApps Winners Roadify, Sportaneous, And DontEat.at
New York City announced the winners of its second BiggApps competition tonight. BiggApps is a way to get developers to use city and government data to create useful apps for citizens and visitors to New York City. The prize money was doubled to $40,000 split up among 14 winning apps. The first prize went to Roadify, an iPhone app that crowdsources information about public transport and parking spots. Users can give or get parking spots, realtime updates about buses and subways, or transit schedules. The parking finder is genius. It shows the spot using GPS on a map. I think everyone who has ever tried to park in New York City has dreamt of an app like this. Now someone actually built it. Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/mje3raJ2Yfc/
Facebook Now Has 250 Million Mobile Users (And A New Unified Mobile Website To Match)
For years now, Facebook has offered quite a few ways to access the site from mobile devices, and they've proven immensely popular. In February 2010 the site had 100 million mobile users per month ?today it's announcing that it's up to 250 million. To coincide with the growth stats, Facebook has some other news to announce about mobile. We hear most often about Facebook's native applications available for iPhone, Android, WebOS, and other app platforms, but a significant majority of mobile users actually access the site from the web. And up until now Facebook's web setup has been a bit complicated: users on smartphones like Android and iPhones have been directed to touch.facebook.com, which is optimized for large touchscreens. And users accessing the site from a featurephones (and there are a lot of them) would be directed to the more plain-looking m.facebook.com. Today, that's changing: Facebook is merging touch.facebook.com and m.facebook.com into the same site.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/MrqtXq1_Uwk/
Google?s Music Search Engine Quietly Vanishes From The Web
At the end of October 2009, my colleague Jason Kincaid traveled all the way to Hollywood, Los Angeles, for the official unveiling of Google's new music search initiative by the Internet giant and its partners, Lala, Rhapsody, imeem and MySpace Music / iLike. He interviewed just about everyone involved about the news, and Mike Arrington followed up with a post basically calling out Facebook and Ticketmaster for not acquiring iLike instead of MySpace. In a blog post, Google said that, going forward, a simple Google web search would enable users to "search and more easily discover millions of songs". Queries for songs, artists or albums would return search results including links to an audio preview of those songs provided by its music search partners, at least in the United States - for starters.Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/7Qe3vUeDIbw/

Disrupt Winner Qwiki Raises, Like, $1 Million From Groupon Co-Founders
TechCrunch Disrupt winner Qwiki is on a roll. The visual search startup raised $8 million earlier this year from a number of well-knowninvestors including early Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. And today, the startup is announcing that it has received $1 million in new funding from Lightbank, the investment fund of Groupon co-founders Brad Keywell and Eric Lefkofsky. This brings the company's total amount raised to $10.5 million. What makes Qwiki so compelling is its ability to generate media on the fly that combines text, audio, and animated photos. It presents information in a highly visual way, assembling photos and spoken text from Wikipedia and other sources to create visual guides to millions of topics. Put Some Joulies In Your Java

Test that showed Android browser faster than iPhone Safari was flawed

Apple has lashed out at Blaze Software, the company behind the test, saying: "Their testing is flawed. They didn't actually test the Safari browser on the iPhone. Instead they only tested their own proprietary app, which uses an embedded Web viewer that doesn't actually take advantage of Safari's Web performance optimizations."
Blaze has updated its website in response to Apple's rebuttal, kind of admitting it made a mistake, but also attacking Apple for crippling iOS's embedded Web viewer.
There's another, more nefarious, story at play, though. With iOS 4.3, Apple shipped a new version of Mobile Safari, which thanks to Nitro JavaScript and asynchronous rendering should be very fast indeed. Apple didn't update the embedded Web viewer that iOS Web apps use, however. The result is that while websites are very snappy, Web apps that you launch from the home screen are sluggish.
By not updating the embedded Web viewer, developers are claiming that Apple is intentionally stymying the performance -- and thus adoption -- of Web apps on the iOS platform. It could simply be that Apple didn't get around to updating the embedded Web viewer in time for iOS 4.3's release, though.

Surfy for Windows Phone 7 is a free, tabbed Web browser
While you wait patiently for Microsoft to deliver Internet Explorer Mobile 9 to your Windows Phone 7 device, you may find yourself wanting for a slightly more feature-filled browser that you can use right now. Surfy is a nice option that's worth checking out, introducing several features you won't find in the stock WP7 browser.Surfy offers tabbed browsing, a fullscreen mode, and orientation locking so that you don't unexpectedly switch from landscape to portrait viewing. Its address bar provides suggestions as you type, and autocomplete is supported for text input fields.
There's also detailed in-app help provided, and Surfy's developer is keen on adding new user-suggested features -- you can pitch your ideas using the app's feedback system.
Surfy is available for free from the Zune Marketplace.
