Keep Track Of All The Apps Launching At SXSW At AppShowcase

South by Southwest is not only a launching platform for new startups, but has also become a destination for existing companies to show off new features and technologies. For example, we know Foursquare has some surprises for us in the next week or so, and I'm sure there will be a host of other companies launching SXSW dedicated apps or features as the conference approaches. Appstores.com is making it a whole lot more easy to find any apps that are SXSW related or that could be useful at the event. Called the Unofficial SXSW AppShowcase, the store aims to be the go-to destination for relevant SXSW apps. The dedicated SWSW app store is powered by AppBistro's AppStores.com, which launched as a a white label platform to create app stores on the fly. Appbistro launched at TechCrunch Disrupt last year, as a Facebook Page app marketplace.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

Google's Content-Farm Algorithm Yields Bitter Harvest

Late last month, Google deployed a new algorithm intended to improve the quality of its search results, and as some critics feared, the results have in several cases hurt legitimate websites. The algorithm was meant to clamp down on website owners gaming the system to raise their standings in search results. Perhaps two of the most prominent accused system-gamers in recent months were J.C. Penney and Overstock.com.

NeuroSky shows off MyndPlay, we control movies with our brainwaves (video)

Would you pay $100 to control the outcome of a movie with the power of your mind? That's what NeuroSky and Triete Labs are banking on with MyndPlay. Simply put, it uses NeuroSky's $99 Mindwave headset with a custom video player that monitors your mental activity during critical points in specially designed films, and offers multiple outcomes depending on your focus and relaxation levels. For instance, in Paranormal Mynd (above), you play an exorcist who must drive a evil spirit away -- if you don't focus intently, this woman will choke to death. Another gangster film has you dodging bullets and sports multiple endings; depending on how relaxed and concentrated you are, you could come away clean, take a bullet to the head, or dodge poorly and have the projectile strike your friend dead instead. MyndPlay plans to produce a raft of such short-form content for $0.49 to $1.99 per episode, and also let you shoot and share your own, scripting sequences with a tool to be released next month called MyndPlay Pro.

We gave Paranormal Mynd a try at GDC 2011, and came away somewhat impressed -- you definitely can control the outcome of a scene, but it doesn't work quite like you'd expect. Since NeuroSky's technology is still limited to detecting the mental states of concentration and relaxation, you can't "will" the movie to go the way you'd like with your thoughts -- in fact, thinking about anything rather than what you're seeing on screen seemed to register as a form of distraction, and lowered our scores. Instead, the ticket to success seemed to be focusing intently on processing the images on screen and clearing our head of all thought or emotion, making us feel totally brain-dead even as we aced the scene. Already a T-Mobile subscriber? Been thinking about adding a mobile broadband plan to go along with it? Hold on to that credit card for a little longer, as we're hearing that the company is about to roll out new webConnect plans that will, at least in some cases, include a 20 percent discount for those who already have voice plans. The date March 13th is mentioned as something of a line in the sand between the current and new offerings, but really that's about all we know at this point. Well, about these plans, anyway.
