When your BlackBerry rings, check your inPulse wristwatch instead
The inPulse Bluetooth watch looks like a pretty useful accessory for BlackBerry owners. It functions as a regular watch, but when paired with the phone, will provide visible information about incoming calls, SMS and emails on its large 1.3″ OLED display. I can imagine how something like this would be very handy when your phone [...] Filed in categories: Blackberry related, Bluetooth Gear, News, Spotlight Gadgets, Watches and ClocksTagged: Blackberry, Bluetooth Gear, WatchWhen your BlackBerry rings, check your inPulse wristwatch instead originally appeared on The Gadgeteer on September 20, 2010 at 8:00 am.

Hide or move the orange button in Firefox 4 (updated)
Filed under: Mozilla, Browsers
With the release of the latest Firefox 4 beta build, the original userChrome.css hack fails to remove the big, orange menu button. Fortunately, Download Squad commenter poiru pointed out a thread on the Rainmeter forums that provides some working CSS! If you know what you're doing, head over to that thread and copy the CSS -- if not, read on for some instructions!
Open Firefox 4 beta 5 (or later)
Locate your Profile directory -- click Help > Troubleshooting Information and then Open Containing Folder
Now navigate to the Chrome directory
Copy userChrome-example.css
Rename your copy to userChrome.css
Open userChrome.css in your editor of choice and dump the following code in it:
margin-top:0px!important;
}
#appmenu-button-container {
position: fixed!important;
}
#navigator-toolbox[tabsontop="true"] #TabsToolbar {
padding-left: 110px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-strip {
height: 22px!important;
}
.tabbrowser-tab {
height: 22px!important; padding-right: 3px!important;
}
#toolbar-menubar {
margin: -27px 98px 2px 95px;
}
Alternatively, you can download my userChrome.css file -- but make sure you rename it beforehand!
You'll note that my code is slightly different from the CSS on the Rainmeter forums. I played with the positioning a little to make it "tighter." That said, I'm sure that with a little work you could make it look even nicer -- and if you do, please share your changes in the comments.Hide or move the orange button in Firefox 4 (updated) originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 12:03:00 EST. Seagate issues industry's first 1.5TB external 2.5-inch HDD: FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0
Look out, world -- Seagate's got a new portable hard drive comin' your way, and it's as capacious as ever. If you'll recall, Western Digital broke the 1TB mark in the diminutive 2.5-inch drive sector back in July of last year, and now we're seeing a 50 percent boost with the 1.5TB FreeAgent GoFlex ultra-portable drive. The company's claims that this is a first of its kind, and we certainly aren't in the mood to argue. It's designed to play nice with both Macs and PCs (it's formatted as NTFS), and better still, it's all set up to take advantage of that shiny new USB 3.0 port on your shiny new laptop. As with the other GoFlex gear, this one also has a removable dongle on the bottom for docking (with an optional GoFlex Net or GoFlex TV HD, naturally), and as with some of the company's past drives, you'll also find an assortment of 20 Paramount Pictures movies that can be unlocked via license key online. She's available in every color you could imagine so long as it's black, and it can be yours for the tidy sum of $249.99. Gmail update in the Android Market, brings priority inbox to mobile
Gmail just got an update to add some of those cool UI improvements -- and it's been moved into the Android Market. This means that from now on, you won’t have to wait for system updates to get Google’s latest and greatest e-mail client. You will find some pretty cool improvements in this particular update including a much better implementation of how "quoted text" works within e-mail threads as well as limited (for now) support for Google’s new Priority Inbox feature – just be sure to enable it on your desktop version of Gmail first. You need Froyo to take advantage, and we've got the download links after the break. [Google]

Motorola Droid X now getting OTA Android 2.2 update
Good way to start Wednesday, indeed. Right on schedule (and not a minute too soon), the over-the-air Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) update for Motorola Droid X has started propagating the radio waves. We've received dozens of tips already, from those who both checked manually and received notification in the status bar. In addition to a new Android, there's also improves visual voicemail with Bluetooth support, a refreshed mobile hotspot app, and a fix to prevent data connections from dropping as you move between WiFi and 3G coverage. Go on, check your phone now -- and don't forget to pick up the new Gmail when you're done updating.

Sony 'Advanced Model' (Alpha A77?) DSLR emerges at Photokina, E-mount firmware coming soon
We've heard Sony use the term "Advanced Model" when dealing with concepts before, and it seems that it's using said code once more to disguise what may end up being the A77. Rumors have been flaring over the past few weeks, noting that this particular Alpha DSLR would be showcased at Photokina before being officially unveiled at CES 2011. Few details were given, but we're able to tell that it'll shoot HD video in AVCHD and will be compatible with a vertical grip. Moreover, it'll ship with a translucent mirror (as found in the A55 and A33) and an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. At the company's Photokina press conference, an executive noted that the cam will be "far more powerful than the a55," and that it'll be aimed at "serious enthusiast photographers."
A slew of concept / prototype lenses were also encased (including a comically large 500mm f/4 cannon) at Sony's booth, not to mention a few that'll definitely be available from 2011 and 2012. Back at the presser, we were informed that a grand total of ten A-mount (Alpha DSLR compatible) lenses will be on sale by 2012, and it's also considering working with a number of partners in order to develop third-party E-mount lenses for the NEX range. Moreover, a firmware update is slated for mid-October to bring autofocus support to A-mount lenses used on E-mount cameras, aperture control in video mode and customizable keys, while the NEX-VG10 Handycam will see an A-mount lens firmware update in November. Speaking of E-mount cameras, Sony's also developing its own micro flash for use in low(er)-light situations, and considering that it recently grabbed a full 50 percent of the mirrorless market share in Europe, we'd guess it's nowhere near slowing down on the innovation. BitTorrent Mainline 7.1 now has uTorrent's apps
Filed under: Internet, P2P
BitTorrent Inc's Mainline client (i.e. the one you can download from their homepage) now has the ability to use apps that, until now, were only usable with uTorrent. These apps allow you to augment your BitTorrent client much in the same way that Firefox add-ons or Chrome extensions alter your browser.
Built using JavaScript, HTML and CSS -- the same 'Open Web' technologies that Mozilla has been harping about -- these apps are free, and easily downloadable from within the new BitTorrent client. Having said that, only 11 apps are available at the moment (including the rather cute 'Torrent Tweet' and a BitDefender-powered virus scanner) -- and I'm not quite sure how developers go about having their apps indexed by the client's built-in search engine (which might be why there are only 11 apps...) Still, if you want to have a go at developing your own app, there's an official SDK and some tutorials to get you started.
I'm a little baffled by this feature coming to BitTorrent Mainline before uTorrent -- but perhaps BitTorrent Inc wants to try it out on Mainline's 'paltry' 14 million users before rolling it out to uTorrent's 60+ million users. Incidentally, if you're a uTorrent user, apps should find their way to a stable release before the end of the year.

iPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster lives
Apps are funny things. They tend to provide narrow utility -- focusing intensely on one specific thing -- but once you get used to them, you wonder how you lived without them. Take this Awareness! app, for example: it gauges environmental noise levels, sets up a threshold, and then pipes in anything louder than that into your skull alongside your music. Reasons why you'd want that to happen include oncoming SUVs, mothers screaming because their babies are in peril (from oncoming SUVs), or something as benign as your teacher yelling at you for not paying attention in class. There's a nice set of options too, such as manually adjusting how loud a sound must be to be allowed entry into your cranium, as well as pausing of the app or of your music. Awareness! is available for five bucks on the iPhone and iPod touch, and will soon jump on to the iPad, Android, Symbian, and even the Mac and PC.Continue reading iPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster livesiPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster lives originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 04:24:00 EDT. Firefox Panorama about to get even cooler with tab search
Filed under: Mozilla, Browser Tips
I know, I know - today's the day when we're all agog over the new IE9. Well, I decided to buck the trend and show off a brand-new preview video from Mozilla's UI design guru, Aza Raskin.
While you can just view the video after the fold, or directly on Aza's blog, I'll give you the highlights in a nutshell: Aza is showing off how simply typing in Panorama ("Tab Candy") mode highlights all matching tabs. So, instead of a muddled sea of tabs, what you're looking for pops right at you. It's simple, but it's also very powerful. I can only hope that this feature will make it into the final build.
And speaking of tab switching, there's one more tip I'd like to share: In Firefox 4, just start typing the name of an existing tab into the AwesomeBar, and a "Switch to Tab" option will show up as the first choice. This works even if the tab is in another Panorama group (i.e., currently hidden). Very slick! Now, if I could only get my Web music to keep playing while it's in a hidden Panorama group...
Stay tuned for more cool stuff from the Firefox crew -- Sebastian will be meeting them personally soon, and I'm sure he's going to wrangle some juicy, exclusive information out of them.Firefox Panorama about to get even cooler with tab search originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 16:15:00 EST. Shocker! Jorno folding Bluetooth keyboard available for pre-order
Of all the Bluetooth keyboards that have been released for portable devices lately, this is certainly one of them. Cervantes Mobile's Jorno doesn't look particularly comfortable, but it does fold up into a tiny square, it's got a cradle that will fit most handsets, and it's compatible your favorite Bluetooth HID profile-enabled devices. It will be out early next year for $99, although if you pre-order it now you can get it for a smooth $79 -- which is probably the upper limits of what we'd pay for it. That is, if we were going on a modern day On The Road-type odyssey with nothing but a backpack and our dreams, and an iPad to keep a journal of our thoughts. Which we aren't. PR after the break.Continue reading Shocker! Jorno folding Bluetooth keyboard available for pre-orderShocker! Sony VAIO laptops start getting PS3 Remote Play update in the US
It's been available for some VAIOs in Japan, and some intrepid individuals have even gotten it working on non-VAIO computers, but it looks like VAIO users in the US can now finally get some official PS3 Remote Play support. We're still trying to track down a complete list of the computers supported, but it looks like the update at least covers the VAIO EA series, and includes all the functionality you'd expect -- streaming, Bluetooth keyboard support, etc. Be sure to let us know in comments if the update has hit your VAIO.

Virgin Mobile scooping up Samsung Intercept
One great thing about being owned by Sprint is that you can sneak a handset here and there into your own lineup, which is exactly what Virgin Mobile has done in adding the midrange Intercept from Samsung to its range. Actually, it's not in the range just yet -- Virgin's Facebook page says that we should "stay tuned over the next few weeks" to find out the details, which leads us to believe we might see a launch (or at least a launch date announcement) around CTIA early next month. Not the awesomest Android phone in the world, sure, but for a carrier traditionally dominated by low-end prepaid gear, it's a solid addition, we'd say.

Piq is a fun way to create pixel-art and favicons
Filed under: Design
Once upon a time, creating pixel art was a completely manual process. You drew your base shape, and then if you wanted to add highlights, shadows, or blur, you had to draw them in, pixel by pixel.
Piq is a Flash-based pixel art editor that lets you enjoy fine-grained manual control, while making it a bit easier to add those extra touches to your image. You first draw the image pixel by pixel. Then, once you have the base shape, you can use one of several tools to painlessly manipulate the colors.
In the screenshot above, I drew the letters "DLS" (hey, I never said I could do pixel art!), and then I used the "burn" tool to create some highlights. It may not be a very good example of what this tool is capable of, but that's just because I can't draw. As their gallery shows, piq can be used to create some very detailed and beautiful pixel art, such as this beautiful apple.
Once you're done drawing, you can upload your image to the piq gallery with a single click. You can also save the image to your hard drive as a BMP and then easily convert it to a site favicon.Piq is a fun way to create pixel-art and favicons originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference 2010 just kicked off in San Jose, and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has shared something interesting with us on stage -- thanks to a partnership with The Portland Group, it's bringing the CUDA parallel computing framework to x86. Previously limited to NVIDIA GPUs -- and the lynchpin of NVIDIA's argument for GPGPU computing -- CUDA applications will now run on "any computer, or any server in the world." Except those based on ARM, we suppose. Still no word on NVIDIA's x86 CPU.NVIDIA teams with PGI for CUDA-x86, gifts its brand of parallelism to the world originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 13:10:00 EDT. HTC HD7 schematic illustrates our Windows Phone 7 future
First thing's first: there's no way to verify that the above image is a legitimate HTC doc. The tipster seems reliable, having provided WMPoweruser with the HTC Mozart video yesterday, but until we witness Peter Chou holding the damn thing up in front of an audience struggling to get a WiFi signal, we'll remain cautious. Anyhow, what we're looking at above is the claimed first visual of that ephemeral HD7 from HTC, replete with a dedicated camera button and what looks like a dual LED flash, along with a MicroUSB data/power port and headphone jack at the bottom (identical to the HD2 and Desire HD). It's reassuring to see much of the glorious HD2 heritage being carried over into this successor atop HTC's Windows phone line, though if you're not all that keen on jumping on what looks like yet another superpowered 4.3-inch slate, there's always the rumored Trophy handset as well.HTC HD7 schematic illustrates our Windows Phone 7 future originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 03:39:00 EDT. iOS 4.1 has been jailbroken
Filed under: OS Updates, iPhone
I'm not an iOS user, so I'll keep this short and sweet: iOS 4.1, just hours after its public release, has been jailbroken by the notoriously nefarious Chronic Dev Team. The device used in the hack was an iPhone 4, but presumably any iOS 4.1 device will be exploitable in the same way.
It sounds like there's still some work to do -- you can't jailbreak your iOS 4.1 device just yet! -- but I expect it'll only be a matter of days before the exploit finds its way into the hands of the pearly white masses.

Wolfram Alpha now processing U.S. retail sales data
Filed under: Search, web 2.0, Education
When I was a kid and used to fantasize about what the future was going to be like, I didn't envision a Google-like search engine. If anything, I thought the future would hold something more along the lines of Wolfram Alpha - an omniscient search box that would slice and dice numbers and facts in all sorts of crazy ways and spit out a bunch of cool graphs.
And now, Wolfram Alpha has added one more key data source to its growing arsenal: U.S. Department of Commerce reports about retail sales in the States.
This is significant, because there's so much hype about "the economy" and how it's all crashing and burning -- or how it isn't. And really, the best antidote for hype is data. With Wolfram Alpha making this data so compelling and accessible, there's really no reason not to find out for yourself how the U.S. economy is doing. It's also smart enough to seasonally adjust the data in order to compensate for spikes and drops that are due to purchasing habits typical to that time of year rather than actual market anomalies.
Some of the queries you can chart:
Seasonally adjusted retail sales jewelry stores vs U.S. unemployment (Their idea, not mine)
Seasonally adjusted retail sales vs US military spending - This one doesn't give you a graph, but is still quite interesting.
April 2010 retail sales computers vs April 2010 retail sales - To see how large the computing industry's direct role is in U.S. economy.
Bottom line: Wolfram Alpha keeps adding more and more data sources - we just need to figure out how to use them.Wolfram Alpha now processing U.S. retail sales data originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 17:15:00 EST.

NVIDIA CEO: Tegra 3 almost done, Tegra 4 on the way, expect a new Tegra annually
Though NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference is primarily about the applications of GPU computing, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang hasn't shied away from revealing new silicon, and he just promised something quite unexpected to attending press: new Tegra chips. Though the Tegra 2 has yet to leave a single dent on the consumer marketplace -- the Boxee Box famously tossed it out -- Huang told us that not only is a Tegra 3 almost done and a Tegra 4 currently underway, but that we should expect a new Tegra SOC "every single year." Forgive us for being a mite skeptical of the company's ability to attract customers, but the only notches we see on Tegra's belt are the Zune HD... and Microsoft's failed Kin.NVIDIA CEO: Tegra 3 almost done, Tegra 4 on the way, expect a new Tegra annually originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 15:37:00 EDT. Olympus Zuiko-equipped compact camera eyes-on: optical zoom, HDMI spotted
Olympus' PR branch left us digging for details when announcing the outfit's new Zuiko-equipped camera, a concept piece that's actually on track for the real world in early 2011. It seems as if this, along with Fujifilm's FinePix X100, is carving out a new niche in the compact space. It lacks the flexibility of Micro Four Thirds / mirrorless, but it packs a bigger quality punch than any other point-and-shoot on the market. At least with this guy, though, you'll be getting an optical zoom. During our gaze session at Olympus' Photokina booth, we spotted "optical zoom" labeling as well as a toggle switch for pulling the lens in and out, and we also found an HDMI output, video record button, hot shoe accessory port and a pop-up flash. Join us as we go round and round in the video after the break. Early third-generation Kindle software update improves web browser, provides new way to feel e-litist
What better way to read up on your Republic of Gilead lore (whether or not such country allows you to read in the first place) than on a digital screen via firmware that's just a tinge futuristic. Amazon is offering an early preview of software update 3.0.2 for the latest generation of its Kindle reader. It's as simple dragging-and-dropping a file onto your device, jumping through the right menus, and waiting patiently for several minutes. What does it offer? "Web browser and general performance improvements," according to the site, and while the browser did seem a tad snappier, that could very well be a phantasmagoria of our optimism. Still, you do get to show all your friends you've got a newer version, and that's what really matters, right?Early third-generation Kindle software update improves web browser, provides new way to feel e-litist originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 14:32:00 EDT. iPhone Awareness! app selectively filters outside noises into your headphones, saves hipster lives
HTC Mozart shows off Windows Phone 7 credentials on camera, teases specs (video)
1GHz Qualcomm QSD 8250, 576MB of RAM, 1,300mAh Li-Pol battery, 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD screen, and an 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash around the back. Those are the handsome, albeit somewhat predictable, specs of the purported HTC Mozart we have on show today. It looks and reads very much like HTC has just transported the Nexus One/Desire recipe into the Windows Phone 7 world, which isn't exactly the worst idea in the world. But you know what, every time we see one of these WP7 devices in action, we're taken aback by the swiftness of their responsiveness (honestly, Microsoft didn't have to pay us to say that... not extra, anyway), so do yourself a favor and witness this humbly-named device cranking through a Bluetooth pairing process after the break.Continue reading HTC Mozart shows off Windows Phone 7 credentials on camera, teases specs (video)HTC Mozart shows off Windows Phone 7 credentials on camera, teases specs (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 04:54:00 EDT. HTC Lexikon ROM leaks out, Verizon the obvious intended receiver
When last we saw the HTC Lexikon, it was just a smattering of rumored specs. Now we have a leaked ROM to go with it, courtesy of some good old-fashioned Chinese file dumps. Funny thing about the Lexikon, though. When we go back and look at the specs again -- 3.8-inch screen, 512MB RAM/4MB ROM, Qualcomm 72xx processor at 800MHz, QWERTY keyboard, 5MP camera -- sure sounds like a lot like the T-Mobile G2, doesn't it?But, of course, this isn't the G2, as the Verizon branding on the RUU screen shot clearly shows. So what will the Lexikon end up being for Verizon (assuming it makes it all the way to market)? News at 11, folks. Microsoft on IE9: our hardware acceleration is better than yours
Filed under: Microsoft, Browsers
In a blog post -- nay, a call to arms! -- published just moments ago, Microsoft's IE9 team has lowered and braced its hardware acceleration joust and begun its thundering charge towards September 15th: the date of the beta.
The entire post seems dedicated to hardware acceleration, however. Does IE9 have another weapon up its sleeve, or is this it? Perhaps we'll see a series of blog posts over the next few days detailing IE9's secret weapons -- but somehow I doubt it. The developer previews haven't produced any new and exciting technologies, but maybe Microsoft has saved something for the IE9 beta launch next Tuesday.
Internet Explorer 9's secret juice, incidentally, is a rendering pipeline that is hardware accelerated from end to end -- from the downloading of images and video into the graphics card's memory, through to the final composition made by the Desktop Window Manager in the IE9 window. To do this, IE9 leverages both Direct2D and DirectWrite for content rendering, and Direct3D for the actual composition. The blog post has a very nice diagram that details the process, if you're interested.
Microsoft claims that IE9 is the only browser that is fully hardware accelerated -- and while I can confirm that it has the edge on Firefox, I think Chrome might be a lot closer than Microsoft thinks. Of course, Chrome can't win: in a rather thinly-veiled attack, the post also points out that 'other browsers', with their mix of different subsystems and abstraction layers, won't be as fast or stable as IE9.
I'm bored of all this hardware acceleration talk! Where's the user interface? Will IE9 have add-ons, or an app store? Hardware acceleration is great and all, but first and foremost a browser has to be usable.Microsoft on IE9: our hardware acceleration is better than yours originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 10 Sep 2010 14:37:00 EST. BlackBerry Storm3 is actually a warmed-over Storm2?
The plot thickens! You might recall that alleged Storm3 shot from a few hours back -- didn't look half bad, right? Well, remember how we also postulated that it could be a Photoshop job? It's still too early to call it one way or the other, but BGR is reporting that the real Storm3 is more of a Storm2 clone that's slimmed down a bit, lost a tad of weight, and matches up with specs we'd seen in the past, even daring to carry on with the clicky SurePress display that the Torch ditched. Why Verizon would release a phone at the end of 2010 so close in design to an existing device that has accumulated virtually zero buzz is unclear; furthermore, we're more confused than ever whether the shot we saw earlier was a fake or yet another RIM device unrelated to the Storm line. For now, we're going to chalk it all up to SurfBook mania until we get it sorted out, so hang tight.BlackBerry Storm3 is actually a warmed-over Storm2? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 22:34:00 EDT. Make the red ball meet the blue ball in Bipole -- Time-Waster
Filed under: Fun, Games, Time-Wasters
So, there's a red ball, and there's a blue ball. When they meet, there's a flash of light and you win. That sounds simple, right?
Well, Bipole quickly gets complicated. Each level is circular; you use the left and right arrow keys to rotate the level, and the balls slide around, bump against things, and free fall.
Pretty soon, "magnets" appear in the game. I'm not sure why they're called magnets, because they don't actually pull the balls in - they change their color! So, as soon as the red ball touches a blue "magnet," it becomes blue. And if two blue balls meet, nothing happens (ahem). You've got to be careful of the magnets. There are also hazards that just kill the balls altogether.
There are two other handy controls: hit Space to freeze the balls in place, and hit R to restart the level.
It's casual, fun, and quite addictive!Make the red ball meet the blue ball in Bipole -- Time-Waster originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 14:17:00 EST. Keyport Slide adds new feather to its cap with USB key prototype
If you looked at the blade-based key organizer known as the Keyport Slide and thought "this thing could really do with an integrated USB flash drive," you were not alone. The company's currently teasing a few images of a new 4GB accessory, which uses the same attachment as its key blades to slot in and out of that metallic shell. Even more tantalizing, this is said to be only one of a number of new accessories in development for the pricey but versatile door opener. Are these guys trying to subtly start a war with Switzerland or what?

Leica slaps D-Lux 5 badge on Panasonic LX5, hitches up the price
What has a 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor capable of 10.1 megapixel stills, a 3.75x DC Vario-Summicron lens, and 720p AVCHD Lite video? The Panasonic LX5? Why yes, it does, and so does this carbon copy that Leica just unveiled, the D-Lux 5. Much as with the identikit LX3 and D-Lux 4 before them, the new 5 models share pretty much everything apart from brand name, accessories bundled in the box, and that all-important price tag. If you opt for the red circular logo above, you'll have to dish up £630 ($983), whereas the LX5 -- which was criticized for being pricey at launch -- can now be had for around £355 ($554). Feel free to peruse our gallery of D-Lux 5 shots below while pondering the "value" on offer here.Gallery: Leica D-Lux 5 behind glass at Photokina 2010Continue reading Leica slaps D-Lux 5 badge on Panasonic LX5, hitches up the priceLeica slaps D-Lux 5 badge on Panasonic LX5, hitches up the price originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 06:47:00 EDT. ?Steampunk? Designs That Actually Do Real Work

VLC Media Player for iPad now available, your video codec worries decidedly lessen

Ever since Apple added some leeway (and snark!) to its App Store submission rules, the approved apps have become increasingly more interesting: Google Voice clients, a Commodore 64 emulator, and now the VLC Media Player with claims to support "nearly all codec there is." We've spent a few minutes with the program already, and while it's import method is reminiscent of CineXPlayer (i.e. via the Apps tab), the thumbnail-rich interface is much prettier. Official launch date is tomorrow, but we've had no problem downloading from the US and UK stores already, so go ahead and give it a whirl. Or if not, our gallery is below. Panasonic's $900 Lumix GH2 officially debuts: 16MP, 1080p movie mode, 3D interchangeable lens
Well, would you look at that? The rumor mill nailed it once more, and we couldn't be happier about it. Here at Photokina, Panasonic just removed the veil from its glistening Lumix GH2, a followup camera that looks to be worth every penny it'll cost you to upgrade. There's a 16 megapixel Live MOS sensor, SD / SDHC / SDXC memory card slot, Micro Four Thirds mount, 23 points of auto focus tracking, face detection and so, so much more. Like what, you ask? Like an ISO range from 160 to 12800, hot shoe accessory mount, 3-inch rear LCD, mini HDMI output, USB 2.0 connectivity, a 2.5mm remote / external microphone input and a 1080/60i movie mode.

Casio reveals Exilim EX-Z2300 and EX-ZR10 point-and-shoots, sells HDR hard
Casio's Exilim EX-H20G and EX-Z16 certainly stole the spotlight in the company's press conference here at Photokina, but a couple of other point-and-shoots managed to sneak out simultaneously over in Tokyo. Unfortunately, neither the Exilim EX-Z2300 nor the EX-ZR10 will be making a stateside debut, but those situated in continents not named North America may certainly be interested. The former of the two utilizes a 14.1 megapixel sensor, a 3-inch rear LCD (960 x 480 resolution) and a 5x optical zoomer, with other specifications including an SD / SDHC card slot, 34.9MB of inbuilt memory, 720p video recording, an ISO range from 50 to 3200, CCD-shift image stabilization and a rechargeable battery good for around 580 shots.
Moving on to the ZR10 (not to be confused with Pentax's similarly named RZ10), this one is Casio's HDR baby. During the company's presser, executives went on (and on) about how wunderbar the camera's inbuilt HDR ART function was, and honestly, the images that were being displayed were indeed pretty fanciful. The point-and-shoot relies on a back-illuminated 12.1 megapixel sensor, the Exilim Engine HS, 28mm 7x zoom lens, an automatic panorama option and a newfangled burst mode that enables up to 30 shots of 10 megapixel images to be taken, with high-speed burst shooting at a maximum speed of 40 shots per second. Better still, the company has upped the video resolution here to 1080p, while also throwing in an SD / SDHC / SDXC card slot, ISO range of 100 to 3200 and a rechargeable battery. No one's talking pricing, release dates nor release regions just yet (aside from shunning America, of course), but we'll be sure to update just as soon as those facts and figures hit our desk. Oh, and we did manage to score a few precious seconds with this guy here in Köln, and it's exceedingly slim given the feature set. We can't speak for the image and video quality first-hand, but based on what was shown and the aesthetic that we witnessed, we'd say the ZR10 has a bright future ahead of it. Leica introduces M9 'Titanium,' limited to just 500 lucious pieces
Can't afford anything that's been introduced at Photokina so far? Unfortunately for you, there's hardly a chance that Leica's newest limited edition product will be the one that slips under the budget. At the outfit's exclusive press preview this evening in Cologne, a gallery of executives from Leica and Volkswagen (who chipped in on the design) formally unveiled the M9 'Titanium.' For all intents and purposes, this is just a souped-up M9, but there's plenty to love for those who fancy high-fashion. You know, like a trim that uses leather "typically reserved for the interiors of Audi's premium automobiles."
According to Leica, "anything that looks like titanium, is titanium." It's also coated with a fingerprint-resistant overlay, and the bundle is slated to include the camera itself, a 35mm Summilux F/1.4 prime lens, lens hood, a new carrying concept (just a single hook for a carry strap), a newfangled electronic illumination system and a fanciful cardboard box made somewhere in the Black Forest. Just 500 of these kits are being produced and sold for an undisclosed amount starting in November, and chances are all but one or two have already been claimed. Good luck getting in line, and you might as well forget scoring the four millionth Leica camera to be produced since 1923 -- a specially-stamped M9 'Titanium' -- as that one's being given away to someone far more important than us tonight. NewerTech's Guardian MAXimus mini RAIDs your data in real time, armed to the teeth with tiny drives
To think it's been three years since the NewerTech Guardian MAXimus debuted. How time flies. But also too the pace of technology, which is why it's time to upgrade. The new Guardian MAXimus mini claims to do everything its ancestor did but with a pair of far smaller drives, making for a 1.5 pound package of RAID storage little bigger than a single 3.5-inch hard disk standing all by its lonesome. The brushed aluminum fanless unit connects via eSATA, USB 2.0 and both FireWire 800 and 400 in sizes up to 1.5TB, starting at $250 for a pair of 500GB, 5400RPM drives, but if you're the go-big-or-go-home type you'll also find a wallet-obliterating $3,300 package with two 400GB SSDs to make your files fly by. Strangely though, there's no USB 3.0 to be had even for that price. Perhaps next time? PR after the break.Continue reading NewerTech's Guardian MAXimus mini RAIDs your data in real time, armed to the teeth with tiny drivesNewerTech's Guardian MAXimus mini RAIDs your data in real time, armed to the teeth with tiny drives originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 02:29:00 EDT.

HTC Lexikon shows up in leaked ROM update: is it the Merge for Verizon?
You might remember some discussion of the Lexikon about this time last month, a rumored Android piece from HTC sporting an 800MHz MSM7630 core, a 5 megapixel camera, 3.8-inch WVGA display, 4GB of onboard storage, Froyo with Sense, and a QWERTY keyboard. Sounds a little bit like the G2 / Desire Z, doesn't it? Indeed, those other models use Qualcomm's MSM7230 processor, the GSM version of the 7630 that'd be required for action on Verizon. Well, fast forward to a new ROM update leak, showing a rendered device with Verizon branding up top and a face that looks suspiciously similar to that dual-mode GSM / CDMA slider we've been tracking for a couple months (pay particular attention to the creases below the touch buttons). Separately, one of our time-tested tipsters has let us know that the Lexikon is the same phone as the so-called Merge; we hope you haven't grown attached to the flaming red keyboard, because more recent hardware revisions don't have it. Hey, maybe you'll be able to accessorize like you can with the Droid Incredible, eh?

Motorola Flipout may be delayed -- or dead -- on AT&T
It's not often that a smartphone gets all the way into testers' hands and in-store marketing materials are printed up, only to see the device killed off before ever making a sale. But that may be what happened in the case of the Motorola Flipout on AT&T. Engadget got a tip on Saturday that it would hit stores a day later. But here we are a couple days later, and there's no Flipout to be flipped. We know it was in the midst of hands-on testing. But is it dead? Is it resting? Is it pining for the fjords? Was it all just a bad rumor? We'll poke at this one for a little while to see if it starts moving again, but only just a little while. The Data Liberation Movement
Renaissance Italy created an explosion of new ideas across art, science and culture, but the biggest idea to come from that era was the idea of the modern bank. By creating an independent entity to hold and protect customer assets, modern banking helped lay the foundation for modern capitalism, and all the wealth that it has created.
YouTube begins trial of live streaming platform, crowd goes wild
Filed under: Internet, Video, GoogleFrom the oh dear Lord, it's about time department: YouTube, over the next two days, is conducting a trial of its new live streaming platform.
This first test will see live content streamed by four of its partners: Howcast, Next New Networks (Barely Political), Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. Admittedly I haven't heard of any of them -- and I'm more interested in watching the season finale of True Blood -- but looking at their channel pages, they all seem to be popular.
The test will run for two days, after which live streaming will presumably be rolled out to the unwashed masses. While I'm sure there'll be tons of user-generated content, I'm more interested in whether YouTube can strike up broadcast deals with real broadcasters. TV shows, live music, news... this could be massive.
The live broadcast schedule for today is below -- see if anything catches your eye!

Adobe Illustrator HTML5 add-on pack released, lets you export CSS3, SVG and HTML directly
Filed under: Developer, Adobe, Browsers
A new beta 'Labs' add-on from Adobe adds a ton of HTML5-specific features to Adobe Illustrator CS5. This follows the release of an HTML5 add-on for Dreamweaver CS5 that shipped at the end of August.
This add-on actually allows users of Illustrator to export their designs directly into HTML5 code. Instead of shipping off finished designs to be re-rendered in HTML and CSS by a Web designer, Illustrator can now export images as a combination of SVG and CSS3. The exported Web resource, according to Adobe, will be compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and hopefully IE9.
Technologizer, presumably extrapolating from the add-on's download page, says that the HTML5 code produced by Illustrator will work seamlessly across the platforms; on PCs, tablets and smartphones. I guess that has something to do with the infinite scalability of vector graphics, but as I don't have a copy of Illustrator I can't confirm it.
This marks a major deviation for Illustrator, and it definitely shows that Adobe, despite its huge investment in Flash, is trying its best to stay contemporary -- or at the very least, ensuring the customers of its Creative Studio cash cow stay happy.Adobe Illustrator HTML5 add-on pack released, lets you export CSS3, SVG and HTML directly originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 07:15:00 EST.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 in the wild one more time, still looks exactly like a 9700
Look, we know that every new BlackBerry model is going to bear a striking resemblance to the model it replaces -- that's just how RIM does things -- but isn't this getting a little out of hand? The BlackBerry 6-equpped Bold 9780 has been leaked a few times at this point, but we're seeing it now for the first time totally unshackled from Mr. Blurrycam's surly bonds... and yeah, if you had any doubts as to whether it was a dead ringer for the 9700 it'll likely be replacing, you can put those doubts to rest. Of course, when you've got a keyboard as good as the Bold series does, sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone, we suppose -- just makes that lucrative early upgrade market a little tougher to tap.
